Relive Childhood – NES

I still remember when my brother and I used to rush home after the annual day at school to kick start the summer vacation. Back in the day, there were no Aircons, and summer heat didn’t really matter so much to us as kids.

Grabbing a “gola” from dodgy stalls (never really cared if they were hygienic 🙂 )and playing Video Games felt like a heaven. Video Game Consoles available in India at that time were cheap knock offs of the Nintendos and Gameboys available in other developed countries.

I still remember they used to cost Rs. 500 upwards and the game controllers were around Rs. 50.

Contra, Ice Climber, Baseball, Tennis, Bomberman, Wolf, Claw were some of my favourites.

It is great to see how far the Gaming Industry has come since then. The graphics have massively improved, story lines have gotten way more complex, multiplayer has now become the default and in-app purchases have become a norm.

I still though, once in a while, like to re-visit the memory lane and relive those moments.

In this article, I will share a few tips on how you can too relive those moments on your iPhones and Androids!

Basically, we need to install the NES Emulator on the phone and then install the NES ROMS (these are like the Game cassettes).

How-to for iPhones

Apple likes to keep things under their tight control making it super difficult for “non-compliant” apps to be listed on the App Store. They have also made Jailbreaking more and more difficult with every passing year.

Fortunately enough, there are still various ways to download the apps outside the App Store.

One of the popular ways is to use Cydia Impactor to side load the Apps on your iPhone. This bypasses Apple’s tight control but the downside is you can never be too certain from which source you are getting the apps and could make your device vulnerable ⚠️

So here is what I recommend:

  1. Visit https://altstore.io from your Windows or Mac and download the Alt Server
  2. After installing the Alt Server, connect your iPhone and Install the Alt-Server on your iPhone. Remember, if 2 Factor is enabled on your apple account, please issue a app specific password (instructions available here)
  3. Open the AltStore on your iPhone and install the App “Delta”.
  4. Now we are all set with the Emulator. However, we still need to Add the NES Roms of your favourite games. There are several sites from where you can get the .zip file of the Roms. Once such site is www.downloadroms.io . Another good one is www.romsmania.cc . Or you could simply do a Google Search of your favourite Game followed by the keyword ROM
  5. Once you have saved the .zip ROM, simply open it in Delta.
  6. Enjoy Playing!

How-to for Android

Google takes a different approach from Apple and makes it a lot easier to install the NES Emulator.

  1. A quick Google Play store search with “NES Emulator” will return plenty of results. I recommend RetroArch Emulator as it is Free and plays most NES Roms
  3. Once you have saved the .zip ROM, simply open it in RetroArch.
